To prepare for the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) in a few days(!), I’ve been translating one Japanese article per day into English. My friend prodded me to post my translations, so I’ve decided to do that here.

I typically only translate the first four or five paragraphs, as it can be time-consuming, but I find it’s really good practice and improves my reading comprehension. Today’s translation is based on this article.

Omicron Strain — G7 Holds Urgent Meeting About Preservation of Health, Makes Joint Declaration About Response

As infection from a new variant of Covid-19 which was first confirmed in South Africa spreads across Europe and other places, the G7 (the main seven countries) held an emergency meeting about the preservation of health on the night of the 29th, Japan Time.

Also, they arranged a joint declaration which incorporates how they will cooperate to respond to the new variant.

As infection from the new Covid-19 variant which was first confirmed in South Africa, “Omicron,” spreads not just in the south part of Africa but to all regions of the world, the G7 (the main seven countries) held an emergency meeting online about the preservation of health on the 29th from 9pm Japan Time.

The Minister of Health, Labor, and Welfare, (Goto? Somebody’s name), explained that even though the Omicron variant has not been confirmed to be in Japan, they are strengthening protections at ports and airports along with the execution of analysis of the genome of the virus, while conducting observations.

Also at the meeting, with cooperation from international organizations such as the WHO (World Health Organization), the G7 arranged a joint statement that included things like working together going forward to combat the situation, accelerating research and development, as well as holding a second meeting in December.
